ENJOY EACH STEP REACHING THE CRATER
The crater of Santa Ana Volcano has an oval, shell-like form with steep inner walls that descend dramatically to a turquoise sulfur lagoon at its base. It measures roughly 1.5 kilometers in diameter and about 350 meters deep, creating a striking amphitheater shape. The summit of the volcano rises to about 2,381 meters (7,812 feet) above sea level, making it the highest point in western El Salvador. The crater’s layers of rock and ash clearly reveal the volcano’s eruptive history, while fumaroles and the acidic lake give evidence of ongoing geothermal activity.
